When the whole party arrived at Clermont Wednesday early afternoon, the servants took charge of their luggage, placing the visitors in guest houses spread out across the expansive lawn. The main house was a beautiful, but medium size Georgian home, a style currently in fashion in England and spreading to several countries as visitors returned home with a new view of architectural beauty.

Later in the afternoon, when Green Clay and Fitzwilliam Darcy drove south of Richmond in a curricle, in the near distance, Darcy saw beautiful mountains loom on the horizon. The setting reminded him of Pemberley and the nearby Peaks.

Intrigued, Darcy commented to Clay, “I see your valleys are protected by lovely mountains.”

“Protected? There are plenty of wild creatures in the hills. Sometimes we have to protect ourselves and our livestock from their attacks.”

“All the way to Clermont on the other side of Richmond?”

“Well, actually, no.”

“Hmm.”

“You have thought of something that did not occur to me,” Clay said. “We will meet Mr. Hughes since I have the appointment already scheduled and you can query him of the potential dangers. He will have firsthand knowledge that I do not possess.”

“True. I do not want to discount the farm without more information.”

“But remember the other farm is between Richmond and Lexington. There are hills everywhere, but these ahead are small mountains. I imagine the second farm might have just risen to the number one choice due to its location. It is one hundred acres larger anyway, but of course more expensive.”

“That actually hardly matters under the circumstances. I do not want wolves and bears and mountain lions chasing my thoroughbreds. We are at the foot of the Peaks in Derbyshire and it works well because we are close enough to enjoy their beauty and to take rides into the mountains, but not so close that the wildlife threaten our stock.”

On their way back home through the downtown of Richmond in route to Clermont on the city’s far side, Darcy asked, “Is Richmond in Kentucky named for Richmond in Virginia?”

“I am fairly certain it is.”

The next day Clay and Darcy headed the opposite direction from Clermont toward Lexington. Just a mile or two up the road they turned west down a side road, which led to a lovely farm, itself just a mile or so before the banks of the Kentucky River.

“Good! I won’t have to take a ferry to come visit you,” Darcy kidded.

The seven hundred plus acre farm was protected from the river itself by two other intervening farms, but nonetheless charming creeks fed by the river coursed through the property, filled and flowing even in the depths of summer.

“I like the location. It is close to the river, but not too close and, even better, it is close to Clermont,” Darcy said.

“And it is not more than a couple of hours from Lexington, where culture grows more vivid every year.”

As the two men rode up on their horses to the front of the Southern style mansion, two lads rounded the house, one taking charge of their mounts and the other escorting them up the front steps.
