I was eventually released from the darkroom, after three months. I suppose they thought it best that I acclimatise, and so I was placed in one of the hotrooms in Building Nine. Best not throw me back out into the land of the living too quickly.
I’d been here before, so I knew what to expect: the sweating walls, the red ants, the mosquitoes, no toilet at all. In many ways, the hotrooms were worse than the darkrooms, the only difference being that I did have some semblance of privacy, and I was never inside for more than a week. But there was something about the hotrooms that was to make me fear them terribly.
After two days, I was awoken one night to hear the distinct sound of a woman’s voice. I couldn’t tell where it was coming from – it appeared neither near nor far away, just there – and it seemed to echo eerily throughout the building. I resigned myself to the fact that I was finally going mad and, comfortable enough with that idea, went back to sleep.
The following day, I mentioned this voice to the Thai prisoner in the cell next to mine, expecting him to laugh and agree that I was nuts. To my surprise, he had heard the voice too. He also claimed to know who it came from. Building Nine, he said, used to be the women’s prison, a place of terrible reputation where rape and murder were daily occurrences. He believed the voice belonged to the spirit of a woman who had died in the prison, and this was a belief shared by many of the other prisoners and guards as well. Then he told me that he had seen the woman for himself.
One night in the hotroom, he said, he was awakened by a sense that somebody was in the room with him. In a half-sleep, he turned on his mat and immediately felt that there was a figure lying next to him. When he opened his eyes to see, there was nothing there, so he rolled over and went to sleep. He had only just drifted off again when he felt a forceful push in the back which sent him rolling off the mat and onto the floor. As he turned to see what had done this, he saw it. Although the room was dark, he could see the figure on the mat was that of a woman. Her body was beautiful and she had long, wavy hair. He couldn’t see her face as she was facing in the other direction, but he somehow knew she would be beautiful. As he approached her, however, she seemed to simply dissolve into the blackness of the room, leaving him wondering whether he had dreamed the whole incident.
Not long afterwards, he had his answer. Very early one morning, when it was still dark, he awoke to an awful commotion in the common section of Building Nine. A prisoner had been found hanging from a water pipe, barely alive but still conscious.
