Chapter Sixteen

Haggadah lifted her wine glass and looked at her goddaughter. “From your description of the resurrectionists and the wound on the tall man’s wrist, they may have been the same men from the kirkyard.”

“I wish I could have seen their faces to verify it was them.” Anna glanced at Barret as she cut a wedge of potato in half. “I’m puzzled,” she stabbed the vegetable with her fork and paused with it in midair, “how did Barret know it was them?” She looked at Haggadah, ate the vegetable, and redirected her attention to Douglas, who placed his fork and knife on the edge of his plate.

“I believe dogs possess an intuition to discern when someone has bad intentions.” He lifted the wine bottle and waited for Haggadah to place her glass on the table before refilling all three.

“Barret has a keen sense of smell,” Haggadah added. “As I recall, he approached you on the night you were unearthed and sniffed at your feet. He may have detected their scent lingering on your clothing.”

“Have you contacted the authorities?” Douglas pressed.

Anna and Haggadah looked at each other. The witch replied, “No. We aren’t certain if the two men tried to kill her or were simply exhuming her body.”

“With your permission, I’ll talk to a constable and inform him of the situation. Then, maybe the resurrectionists can be brought in for questioning.” He paused for their reaction to his suggestion, but they remained silent. “We may be able to discover if someone else was involved.”

Anna glanced at Haggadah before posing a question. “I’m the only one who can positively identify the men. How am I to do so if I must remain out of sight?”

Haggadah grinned. “There is another who can identify them.”

Douglas and Anna simultaneously asked, “Who?”

“Barret.”

Everyone looked at the dog, who tilted his head and perked his ears as he looked at each member at the table, secretly wishing for a tidbit of ham to eat.
