Co-sleeping means sharing your bed with your baby. It goes by many other names: the family bed, bed-sharing, sleep-sharing.

Melissa’s Mindset

Technically, “co-sleeping” is the term used to describe a shared sleeping space, which may or may not involve sleeping in the same bed. Researchers use the terms “bed-sharing” and “room-sharing” to be more specific. For the purpose of this chapter, the term “co-sleeping” will be used to refer to sleeping in the same bed.

We do need to tell you, though, that in 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics came out with a controversial statement cautioning against bed-sharing because of a few reports of parents rolling over on their babies in bed. One study that suggests co-sleeping on sofas is a risk factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The AAP now recommends room-sharing for the first year, but not co-sleeping. Bear this in mind as you make your decision.

Many in the sleep community feel the statement goes too far, as many cultures do sleep with their babies safely. There is no indication that safe co-sleeping is related to any deaths and, in fact, many supporters of co-sleeping contend that co-sleeping babies are less likely to suffer SIDS or other life-threatening medical conditions, because parents are right there to handle emergencies.
