10.2.7 Utility Analysis

Utility analysis is a practical tool supporting managers in decision-making processes. It can be used to make a selection between different technologies or between different sources of technology. Utility analysis divides the overall goal of a project into sub-goals (evaluation criteria). Managers asses the utility of each alternative for each sub-goal and then aggregate the scores to an overall utility score for each alternative. Utility analysis consists of the following steps (see Figure 10.5):

Step 1: definition of overall goal of the project.

Step 2: definition of alternative technologies or sources of technology.

Step 3: definition of sub-goals (evaluation criteria).

Step 4: weighting of sub-goals.

Step 5: rating alternatives with regard to each sub-goal.

Step 6: calculation of overall score for alternatives.
