EVERYONE WILL KNOW LOVE

The day’s sun-shower leaves a large rainbow in the sky above the hospital’s roof garden. A wide variety of trees, flowers, and lush green plants offers refuge to all who visit there.

As Thomas sits in his wheelchair under the garden’s only fig tree, Nancy breathes in the morning air next to him and lets out a sigh of relief. “It is a beautiful day,” she says with a large sweet smile.

The petals and leaves of the hospital’s prize rosebushes glisten from the raindrops making their nest in them. A few bees buzz and hover around the two as if they were flowers themselves. A dozen or so birds feast on the scattered seed of yesterday near the garden’s entrance.

With wide eyes, Thomas looks at the rainbow stretching the sky. “It is a beautiful day,” he agrees.

Nancy clears her throat and turns to Thomas. “I had a dream about you last night,” she says. “We were together in a seven-acre patch of cotton ripe for picking. It was white as far as the eye could see. I stood there with you because I wanted to buy the field. But you wouldn’t let me. You told me the field was free, and it wasn’t for me alone.” Nancy raises her eyebrow. “Now, what do you think that means?”

Thomas continues looking above. Rays of light reflect off the small pond to their left and flicker around him, as if hundreds of sparkling diamonds surround him.

“It means a day of peace is coming,” he says confidently.

“I hope I see that day sooner than later.” Nancy chuckles as she rocks back and forth comfortably.

“Everyone will, and everyone will know love.” He allows his eyes to return to the garden.

Nancy’s smile disappears. She sits up straight and forgets to comfortably rock in wonder after his words. How can it be that all will know peace? she thinks. There is so little peace in the world today. It seems impossible to believe that all of humanity could truly love each other. How can Nancy believe that such a thing is possible when she herself knows so few people who are kind, gentle, and meek? She believes only a few see such a thing; only few would enter such rest. For everyone else, a horrible endless fate waits.

“You can’t mean everyone,” she asks seriously.

Thomas closes his eyes, and his head sinks. He exhales. So few can see what he now sees. “The field you saw in your dream is the world. The white cotton represents the hearts of those who have become pure. Everyone will see this day because it is made for them. It is the last day of our ignorance and the first day of our true life.”

“I don’t understand what you mean, Thomas. Not everyone will choose to be good!”

Thomas groans in his spirit. Pity fills his eyes. “What choice does a pot have in how the potter makes it? What choice does a painting have when the artist creates it?”

Nancy crinkles her forehead in confusion.
