2.5 Tools

Tool S2.1: Developing Trust—Time Structuring*

When this six-step process is actioned, you can build trust. It helps you to know exactly what to do in any given situation.

_______________

*  Stewart, I. and Joines, V. (2002)

1.  Time alone—this enables you to focus on what you are there to do.

2.  Rituals—as you greet others or begin a meeting having a standard ritual helps people to predict and so feel safe. For example, a hand shake, hugs, kisses, prayer, or a hongi.

3.  Pastiming—Pass time by talking general chit chat but without action results; for example, the weather, sport, topics of general conversation. This allows people to test and assure themselves that it is safe, as you cannot “get it wrong.”*

4.  Doing the activity (working or playing) that you have gathered to do

5.  Psychological games—this is the equivalent to moving through the storming stage of Tuckman’s theory†—here we understand where the power is and what is safe and not safe.

6.  The last stage is being able to be truly authentic—being able to express what really matters in order to resolve concerns and problems. This is an exchange of authentic wants and needs. Not being able to do this often means people are not able to solve the real problem.
