Chapter 12

A hissing sound, followed by a thud, alerted Marcus to activity beyond his window. Peering through the scratchy pane, he watched Keriss pull back another arrow, ready to take aim at a target hung on a tree trunk in the corner of Brayman’s back yard. Impressed by her skill, he mouthed a silent ‘not bad’, when he saw how accurate her aim was. He was disappointed that after only two days getting to know her, Delan had announced that it was time for them to move on.

They had certainly refreshed themselves at Brayman’s house, filling themselves with Magreanne’s hearty meals and freshly pressed apple juice. Marcus had enjoyed the time getting to know Delan’s relatives and had fun playing several challenging card games. Keriss had joined them some of the time, and Marcus found out that she too believed The Book Beyond Time— in fact, she was involved in helping Brayman print new books and distribute podbooks. Delan had praised his cousin for her archery skills, having been trained by Brayman himself, but Marcus didn’t really believe it until he had seen her practice outside. Even Tress looked healthier after a well-deserved rest. She had made the most of an unlimited supply of fresh hay and been pleased to relax alongside Opus, Delan’s horse.

After packing up and saying their goodbyes, the three friends chatted non-stop as they traveled through the city. Marcus and Delan discussed everything Brayman had told them and shared thoughts about what they had discovered in The Book Beyond Time. Delan seemed to know the book inside out and could even retell obscure or funny parts of the text. Marcus didn’t know that such a serious book could contain so many funny stories, and he tried to get Rindel to listen too.

Rindel, however, was distracted by a swarm of green flies that kept getting stuck in his wild hair. He clutched a parcel of bread rolls and flapjacks as though his life depended on it and thought to himself that finding a bakery must become a priority wherever they journeyed. He had thought about asking Magreanne to travel with them so that she could prepare food, but he knew that Brayman would allow no such thing, especially if they should wander into gratsch territory again.

On the other side of the city, Delan led them away from the main street and through the courtyard of what appeared to be the remains of a castle. Marcus imagined how majestic it must have appeared before being destroyed in the Catastrophe. Now there remained mostly only the low rubble of the original walls.

“Hey, Delan, can you imagine the kinds of battles that would have been fought here centuries ago? Has Brayman ever—”

“Argh, watch out!” yelled Rindel as he ducked, narrowly avoiding being hit by a large stone.

Delan turned to see a group of men lurching toward them, some coming from the street they’d just left, a couple more hiding behind a pile of rubble just up ahead. Two carried yellow-handled ska-swords; the others brandished sticks and stones.
