Jackie insisted on going straight home after the theater that night, and then straight to bed. She also told Alistair that she was exhausted from the night before and needed an uninterrupted night’s sleep. Knowing Patricia would have already told him, she said she’d be catching the early train to visit her family, but would be back that evening.

One of the reasons Jackie had asked Patricia to make the reservation is she didn’t want Alistair thinking she was sneaking away behind his back. He’d been acting so strange ever since she’d been cast in the play, and she was afraid he was trying to guard against her having an affair. As if she had the time or the energy to do such a foolish thing.

Endanger her marriage for a brief fling? No, she only loved Alistair, only wanted Alistair, but she did want the freedom to be herself. Wanted this marriage to be one where she could make some decisions on her own, such as what to wear when they went out, who to invite to their home, even how often she could have lunch with her twin sisters.

Now that they were in New York, Jackie had hoped to see them more often, even invite them and their husbands over for dinner, but Alistair had kept that from happening, too. Subtly, of course, but the results were the same. Fran and Amy had stopped inviting her out and their contact was limited to a few phone calls a week.

Now she was on her way home to the parsonage, which, she was starting to admit, would probably always be more home to her than that stuffy, overly-masculine apartment she was trapped in.

Trapped.

Jackie leaned back and closed her eyes. When had she begun to feel trapped? Yes, the play. That’s definitely when all this had begun, but the why of it, Jackie didn’t know. The one thing that she did know was that she had to break free without breaking her marriage.
