From the moment the plane landed, I ached to see Marc after being without him for a week. He’d gone ahead to New York with Jean a week before the fight. Ayo, Fabumi, Emmy, and I travelled together to support Marc.

Emmy led the way through the airport having travelled through New York many times before. Though being born and bred in Belgium, Emmy was a US citizen. Her mother was African American and her father Belgian. Emmy frequently returned to the US to visit her American family.

Following Emmy, who pushed a stroller with her and Fabumi’s newborn, we exited into the International Arrivals corridor. My heart pumped and butterflies fluttered as my eyes scanned the crowd for Marc and they landed directly on the tall, bald man with shining eyes who held my heart.

Not caring what any onlooker thought, a first for me, I broke into a run before I dropped my bag and jumped into his arms. With my legs wrapped around his waist, he crushed his mouth to mine and kissed me hard.

“I missed you so fucking much, ma petite danseuse,” he grumbled against my lips before kissing me again to the whistles of onlookers. I grinned proudly at the simple thought that I was his girl and there was this man waiting for me.

“Okay lovebirds, Allons-y,” Fabumi chuckled from behind us before Marc put me down. He picked up my bag and followed along to the van waiting for all of us.

Marc and I spent the ride to the hotel completely in one another. I hung on his every word as he talked about the interviews he’d done over the week and meeting the other fighters at a promotional event where he came head to head with his opponent who sounded like a piece of work, but I knew Marc could handle him.

There were only three days until the fight, and I could feel Marc’s normally calm demeanor was a little more intensified. When it came to fighting, he took every moment seriously and I respected that as I was the same about dance.

“Are you ready to see New York?” He played with my freshly done braids.

“Of course,” I cooed as his hand rubbed my thigh. I slapped a hand over my mouth as I yawned. “Maybe, a nap first though.”

“Auntie did send me with a mission,” Ayo piped up from the seat behind us.

“And that was?” I was afraid of what mission my mother gave my cousin for our trip to the Big Apple.

“To find you a husband,” he laughed.

“Is that so?” Marc asked as he turned in the direction of Ayo who continued with his fit of laughter over the matter. “I guess you have a wingman.” Marc nudged my shoulder with his own with a snicker before putting his arm around me.

I instantly folded my arms.

“It’s not funny,” I shot at them. I didn’t want to talk about my inability to be fully open and honest about my relationship with Marc because it put this dark cloud over us.
