Davout was already on the march by the time Marmont drafted his request. Indeed, barring Viceroy Eugène’s expanded command, the entire French army would be hurrying towards Znaim by the end of the day, but little of it would be able to arrive as ‘promptly’ as Marmont hoped. The reports that flowed into imperial headquarters in Wolkersdorf during the night of 9/10 July confirmed Napoleon’s suspicion that Charles and the Hauptarmee were retreating via Znaim. He was soon on the road to Wilfersdorf himself. At 8:30 a.m., just before departing, he outlined his view of the strategic situation and his intentions in a message from Berthier to Davout.
