Perhaps Tecumseh was temporarily hoping to maintain ties with both sides, Americans and British, in order to see what would happen when the war between them came about. If that was the case, Tecumseh did not have long to wait. Soon after war was declared by Congress in June 1812, an attack was mounted on Canada in July via Detroit by a 1,500-man force of regular troops and Ohio militia under General William Hull. Hull arrogantly expected his invading army to be received by the Canadians as a liberating force, but he was quickly disappointed. Retreating back to Detroit after his supply lines to Ohio were cut by the Indians, and fearing an Indian massacre, he surrendered in August to British General Isaac Brock. Some Indians continued to profess their loyalty to the United States, but many were elated, and hope spread that the British would help roll the Americans back beyond the Ohio River. By now, Tecumseh had thrown his support to the British and had used his considerable persuasive powers to win over other warriors who were seen as key to the success of the undermanned British.
