The sweet spot

The sweet spot is what we call a time in the game where Directly Challenging your child to speak will be the most effective. It is:

Not at the beginning or at the end of the game, but somewhere in the middle. At the beginning our children are just getting into the game. At the end they may be on their way to a Red Light. The middle tends to be where our children are at the height of their motivation for the game. Of course, this is not a rule. I suggest you play around with this until you find your child’s sweet spot.

Just before something your child wants in the game. For instance:

– If they want you to throw them the ball, ask them to say a word or phrase just before you throw it to them.

– If they want you to throw a bunch of tissues into the air so that they can watch them fall, ask them to say the word or phrase just before you throw the tissues.

– If they want you to spin them, ask them to say the word or phrase just before you pick them up to spin them.

– If they want you to read them a book, ask them to say the word “read” just after you have turned the page and before you read the new page.
