MY HEART GOT LOST

DEIDRA SCOTT

Chapter One

Rows of black buggies and waiting horses were parked around the small white farm house. In the front yard, little boys ran through the grass, chasing one another across the damp April ground.

John Yoder watched the children from his kitchen window. Occasionally, a fellow-Amish man would walk behind him and give him a pat on the back. Their gentle words of comfort did nothing to ease the pain in John’s heart.

“Sarah is in a better place now,” one of the men told him before they said their goodbyes.

Yes, Sarah was in a better place now. John knew that. After six months of watching his wife wither away, her body slowly consumed by the fast-spreading cancer, he knew that she was finally at peace. Caring for her as she writhed in pain had done more to age John than he wanted to admit.

“Good things are coming,” an Amish woman tried to assure him as she gathered her children to leave.

That morning they had finally put Sarah in the soft spring ground. Her body would rest in the Amish cemetery now – her spirit finally free from all she had endured.

One by one the other Amish gathered their families and left John’s home. And as night closed in, he found himself all alone.

John made his way to the kitchen where he sat down at the table with a cold cup of coffee.

He and Sarah would have been married for twenty years that spring. He took a sip of his coffee. In all that time, John had held a secret in his heart. A secret he hoped that Sarah had never discovered.

A knock on the front door brought John to his feet.

“Who could that be?” he wondered aloud. At eight-thirty, he was certain it was too late for any of the other Amish to be calling.

When John opened the door, he couldn’t help but take a deep breath. On the front porch stood a young man he could hardly recognize.

“Daed,” the voice of the stranger sounded familiar, “I’ve come home, Daed.”

Even though he was sporting a pair of blue jeans and a tee-shirt, it certainly was John’s only son.

“Sam...”John didn’t think he could find the right words to say. He opened the door wider and waited on his son to come inside.

“I heard about Mom,” Sam muttered softly, “I am so sorry...”

John reached out an arm and put it on his son’s shoulder, “Have you been doing okay, out there in the Englisher world?”

Sam took a deep breath, “I’m sorry I left, Daed. It wasn’t fair to leave you here alone. I just couldn’t stand to watch her suffer like that.”

John knew that his son spoke the truth. Although Sam had always been a bit of a rebel, it was his mother’s sickness that finally drove him away from the Amish community.

“I needed to get away.”

John nodded slowly, “Jah, I understand.”

“I’m not home for good.” Sam whispered softly, “I’m only here to see you. I needed a fresh start, Daed, and I think I’ve found one.
