This steel engraving by Alonzo Chappel shows the Americans firing on British troops as they retreat from Concord. The artist created the picture from his imagination, but the general idea is probably correct.

The British marched to Concord. The Americans managed to hide most of their munitions, but the British captured some. Then, as they turned around to march back to Boston, American minutemen, now joined by organized militia companies, were pouring in from the countryside all around, hundreds of them. "It seems as if men came down from the clouds," somebody said later. All along the road back to Boston, armed Americans sometimes drawn up in regimental formations, but more often dispersed in small units in the woods and behind stone walls, fired at the British as they marched in formation. European armies had always fought in formation, two armies drawn up in order facing each other. This rain of bullets from behind walls and around the corner of barns bewildered the British soldiers. They fell steadily. The American force increased as men continued to rain down "from the skies." The British began to run out of ammunition. In terror, they began to run.
