TIP: If you like to spend a lot of time cooking, you can take some of the strain off your feet and back by purchasing a large gel or foam chef’s mat to stand on.

* * *

If you can, plan ahead. Get all your cookware and utensils out and on the counters near you to minimize movement.

When standing, always make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart. If you have to stand in the same position at the stove for an extended period of time, you might want to get a chair with a padded cushion, or fold up a towel and place it on the seat. Prop one knee up on the chair. Switch knees every few minutes. Or place your foot on the chair, as long as it isn’t too high. What you want to do is avoid staying in one position for an extended period of time.

Always contract your abdominals and go into a squat, with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent, when doing any lifting or bending. Bring the item up to your waist, keeping it as close to your body as possible, especially when you’re dealing with items in an oven. (This is one of the reasons Cara loves her slow cooker. It makes cooking dinner a breeze, and as it stays on the counter, so there’s no bending down and lifting.)
