Chapter Five
By the time Penny had returned with the Fawning Five, J.T. had gotten dressed and Brick and Scott had pushed aside some of the furniture to allow everyone to comfortably sit in a circle on the floor. Brick was still angry. By this time, it was almost ten o’clock. He had only said a few words to J.T. since his little outburst, and he kept casting J.T. dark looks. J.T. knew that if things went wrong, he had a huge I-told-you-so coming in his future, but he really did feel much better, and this wasn’t going to be strenuous. He didn’t think he’d really had a concussion at all, despite Scott’s diagnosis, because the headache had eased too quickly. His aunt had fallen a few years ago down some steps at her house and the headache had been excruciating for days. J.T. had definitely hit his head, but he thought he’d just been shaken up and bruised a little. The pills had made him loopy, that’s all.
Brick was being overprotective and now he was angry, especially because Scott seemed to be so amused by J.T. telling him to back off. Apparently there was a lot of sibling rivalry in that relationship, despite their closeness.
When the ladies came in the room, they were delighted to see that two new handsome men had been added to the mix and started preening right away.
“I don’t suppose anyone has any sage?” J.T. asked. No one volunteered a response, except for Scott.
“Sorry, J.T. but I’m fresh out. I usually carry some around in my first aid kit for séances, but you know how it is…”
Brick elbowed him, and he flushed and shrugged. “Sorry.”
“We can make do without it. Before I begin, are all of you okay with this?”
The platinum blonde in the group virtually oozed excitement from every pore. “I’m thrilled! I’ve never been part of a séance before.” The other four voiced their willingness or downright eagerness to participate as well.
“Are all of you open minded?” J.T. asked.
The redhead gave him a saucy smile. “I’m open to anything you suggest, sugar.”
J.T. blushed. “Um…thank you. It’s just that non-believers bring a certain amount of negativity and could adversely affect our communication with the spirits.” He gave Scott a pointed look.
Scott smiled and shook his head. “Maybe I should just sit this one out then.”
“No,” Penny said. “Please don’t. Come over here and sit by me and behave yourself. Just be willing to accept the fact that there are things in this world that you can’t explain, and if you can’t do that, then just keep your mouth shut.”
He smirked and inclined his head. “I can do that…for you.” He moved over to where Penny sat and eased himself down beside her.
“We need to sit in a circle,” said J.T.
“Don’t we need to hold hands?” the Sally-Field-lookalike asked.
“It isn’t necessary, but we can if you’d prefer,” he said.
“Oh, I prefer hand holding.” Sally got J.T.’s left hand, and the blonde hurried to take his right.
