CHAPTER 20
Billâs burial in nearby St. Maryâs Cemetery was to be a private affair for family only, so after we left the church, we went straight back to Peteâs car. I looked around for Thom but didnât see him anywhere.
âThom was really upset,â I said. âI donât understand it.â
âAre you going to ask him about it when you see him on Monday?â Pete asked. âTell him you saw him here?â
âDoes that mean Iâm on the case?â
âWhat case?â He grinned.
âIâm not sure,â I said, laughing. âItâs kind of a âsecret tunnel, broken leg, city councilor, map book, barroom, green Fordâ federal case!â
âSomething like that.â He laughed, too. âSeriously, though, Thom might just be one of those people who like to go to funerals. Like a professional mourner.â
I considered that. âCould be, I guess. After all, a funeral mass is a fairly public event. He must have known heâd be seen by people whoâd recognize him, in spite of the cap and shades.â
âThatâs true,â Pete said. âBut donât forget, he was in on the basement caper, along with Sammy and Duke. Thom may not be as innocent as he looks. Life is full of surprises.â He gave me a long look. âSpeaking of surprises, do you mind if we stop by the station? I want to talk to the chief about the coat they found on Bill. I think the chief might want to take another look at it.â
âDo I have to come in with you? Iâm not one of Chief Whaleyâs favorite people, you know.â
âOh, donât take anything the chief says personally. Heâs all business all the time. Come in with me. He might want to hear about this from you.â
I agreed reluctantly, and that was how I happened to spend part of my Saturday off in the Salem police station, face-to-face with what the comic books would call my arch nemesis. I got a curt nod acknowledging my presence, but he addressed Pete.
âSo, Detective,â he said, âto what do I owe the pleasure of seeing Ms. Barrett once again? So soon.â There was no mistaking the unfriendly glare he sent in my direction.
âShe told me something about the Bill Sullivan case today. Something I guess we missed.â
âSullivan?â Whaley said, looking at the clock on his wall. âBy this time I presume heâs six feet under.â
âWell, sir,â Pete said, âMrs. Sullivan claims the coat he was wearing when we found him wasnât his.â
The chiefâs icy blue eyes narrowed. âYou know that to be a fact, Ms. Barrett?â
I could feel my temper rising. âMrs. Sullivan says the coat isnât Billâs. She ought to know.â
âShe told you this?â
âShe told my aunt.â
âThirdhand information, Detective Mondello,â he said, turning his stare in Peteâs direction. âBut it may be worth checking. Get on it. Interview Mrs. Sullivan again and pick up that coat.â
It was my turn to be surprised when Chief Tom Whaley stuck out his hand. âThank you, Ms. Barrett,â he said.
âYouâre welcome, Chief Whaley,â I said, shaking his big paw.
We left the station and headed for Peteâs car.
