When William Henry Archer, a statistician by training, was demoted from his position of managing actuary at the Catholic, Law and General Life Assurance Company of London in 1852, he decided to throw in the job and move his family to the new colony at Port Phillip Bay, Australia. His rare statistical training stood him in good stead with the governor and, in 1853, he was appointed to the newly created position of Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages for Her Majesty’s Colony of Victoria. Archer is credited with creating one of the most detailed and accurate databases of births, deaths and marriages in the world.
