'Keep away from that dog,' the Colonel roared. 'What do you think you're doing, girl? Get up. Give me your name and address... Ha! Next door neighbours, I see! Now listen to me. You'll go now and you'll be out of my grounds in three minutes, and you'll go down the drive to the gate. And remember this: if I ever catch either of you or any other brat or anybody living in One Tree Hill on my land I'll set the dog on them first and then the police. Go and tell your friends that. Tell everybody you like. Think yourselves lucky that I'm not taking you both to the police station. Be off with you!'

Bill ran for the door and Susan was only just be- hind him. They ran out of the gloom of the musty old hall, across the porch half-smothered in creepers and out into the spring sunshine. Rather to her surprise Bill grabbed Susan's hand as they ran down the weedy drive. They hardly noticed the blossoms of the almond trees fluttering to the ground like pink snow as the wind played in their branches and they were nearly at the old iron gates when Susan stopped and pressed her hand to her side.

'I can't run any more, Bill,' she gasped. 'I've got an awful stitch.'

They looked back and saw the Colonel with Rex at his side standing outside the porch. They were not sure, but they thought that the old man was shaking his fist at them. For the first time for half an hour Bill managed a grin.

'We're O.K. now, Susan. He can't catch us. I'm going to tell my dad what he said. Are you?'

'I hadn't thought about it. Bill. Do you mind if we sit down when we get outside the gates? I'm not feeling too good.'

'I got a stitch too,' he said gallantly. 'We'll wait here,' and they sat on the grass verge. Susan's face was whiter than usual and she felt thoroughly wretched. Her teeth were chattering, her knees were weak, and although she would never have dared to say so she felt sick and prayed that she wouldn't be.

'You all right, Sue? Good idea, that - I'm going to call you Sue... Sure you're all right?'

'I will be soon, Bill. It's all that running and being so scared.'

'Where's Betty and Jim?' he asked suddenly. 'Back there in the forest?'

'I don't know. Jim was scared and ran off and Betty had to go with him, I think. It all happened so quickly.'

'You came up to help me, Sue. I know you did. We're friends now. For ever, maybe.'

She gave him a radiant smile. I'd like that, Bill. Will you help me find Timothy?'

'Who's Timothy?'

'I told you - he's our cat. But p'raps we'd better go home first and tell them we haven't found him? I'm better now.'

'Come on, then. We'll find your silly old cat. He's so fat he couldn't walk far, anyway! I say, Sue, that was a pretty good adventure, wasn't it? I wondered what he was going to do when we had to go to the house.
