“That was surprising,” Jude said to Marissa as they stood outside the restaurant.
“What are you talking about?” Marissa was unhappy with Jude’s actions and she wasn’t about to let him off the hook.
“I came over to your table because I couldn’t believe that you were out to lunch with a guy like that, especially after you turned me down.”
“Everything is not about you, Jude.” She threw up her hands, grunted and stomped off to her car.
“Hey wait a minute.” Jude rushed over to her. He grabbed her arm to stop her from opening her car door. “Why are you so upset with me? I’m just saying that Tony surprised me. That’s all.”
“Well, I didn’t like your attitude. You didn’t have to treat him like that. I’m surprised that he felt comfortable enough to ask for help with finding a job.”
“I’m glad he did ask, I still have some connections in this city and I’m going to see about getting him a job.”
That calmed her. Marissa relaxed a bit. “Thank you. I appreciate your doing that. Tony has given his life to Christ, all he needs is a break to help him turn his life around.”
Jude leaned against Marissa’s car as he studied her. “You’re really something, you know that?”
“I’m just Marissa Allen, nothing more, nothing less.”
“Yeah, but you didn’t have to forgive Tony for what he did to you back in the day. And you certainly didn’t have to send him multiple letters urging him to accept the Lord in his life. Sounds like something my mother would have done.”
Marissa smiled. “Who do you think advised me to write Tony?”
Jude laughed. “My mother couldn’t stand you when I first introduced you to her. Now all of a sudden the two of you are like best friends.”
Marissa elbowed Jude. “She no longer has to worry about me stealing her little boy away, so we have a much better relationship now.”
“All you had to do was break up with her son, huh?”
“I didn’t break up with you, Jude. You rarely called me once we finished college. You went on with your life, leaving me back here waiting on you to come home.”
“Oh but I did come home. And that’s when you accused me of changing and not having the same love for God that I once had. You acted like you were so much better than me and I just didn’t want to deal with that.”
She remembered the day Jude had come home. It was the last time he’d been home for Thanksgiving. Marissa had been excited to see him and had prayed that he was ready to come home and work in the ministry with her.
But Jude wasn’t interested in the ministry anymore. He stood in front of her bragging about how much money he was making and how wonderful life was going for him. He wanted nothing to do with the ministry he once loved being a part of. He did, however, want Marissa to be a part of his world.
