Chapter Nine

“Thanks for making the cocoa.” Lauren leaned back in the chair and took a cautious sip of the steaming chocolate. “It’s wonderful.”

“I’m glad you like it.” Alex had been waited on all his life and it felt surprisingly good to wait on someone else for a change.

Lauren took another sip. “It’s weird but my stomach feels fine now. Maybe I’m not getting sick after all.”

Alex stirred the marshmallows into his drink with the tip of his spoon and hid a smile. He could have told her she wasn’t sick. Lauren could be rather high-strung and he’d had the feeling all along that her jumpy stomach resulted from her dinner plans going awry. Someone who was sick could never have responded to his kisses the way she had. His body tightened, remembering the taste of her lips, the feel of her soft skin beneath his hand….

“Tell me about your evening.” Lauren wrapped her fingers around the mug. “How was your date?”

Her words were like a splash of cold water. Date? There were thousands of things they could discuss and she wanted to talk about another woman?

“It was okay,” Alex said with a shrug. The evening was a nonevent as far as he was concerned. Four wasted hours that he could have spent at home.

“Just okay?” Lauren prompted.

Alex hesitated for a moment. When he did speak, he chose his words carefully, not wanting to disparage Carly or the others in any way.

“Carly is a nice woman. Her friends are nice. There’s nothing wrong with her or them. But I don’t plan on seeing her again. At least not socially.”

Surprise skittered across Lauren’s face. “Why is that?”

It seemed a ridiculous question for her to ask after what had happened between them less than a half hour before, but she appeared to expect an answer.

“I’ll be leaving soon,” he said finally. “I’m not interested in a serious relationship and she made it clear that’s what she’s looking for.”

Lauren licked the stickiness off her spoon. “Did you tell her that?”

His brows pulled together. “We went out one time.”

“You had fun.”

“Yes, but—”

“She’s probably expecting you to call.”

“I didn’t say I would.” Alex narrowed his gaze. “Why are you trying to push her on me, anyway?”

“I’m not,” Lauren said. “I just know how it feels to be on her end.”

The pain in her voice quelled his anger and reminded him how different Lauren was from other women he’d dated. They’d be more likely to claw a competitor’s eyes out than to sympathize with them.

“And how is that?” he asked quietly.

“You go out with a guy. You have a good time. He seems to enjoy your company, too. The evening ends and your expectation is that he’ll call and ask you out again.” She paused for a moment and her lips twisted in a humorless smile. “But he doesn’t. You blame yourself. Maybe I shouldn’t have said this. Maybe I should have said that. Maybe I talked too much. Maybe I didn’t talk enough. It can drive you crazy.
