ELEVEN
“Good morning.” Rachelle stepped out of Len’s passageway and met Gage in the kitchen of the restaurant. She caught him with a bite of Tildy’s amazing strudel in his mouth. “Good, huh?” Rachelle smiled and waited for him to finish on a gulp.
He wiped the corners of his mouth. “Unbelievably good. I might have to kidnap her when I set sail. I could use a good cook on board.”
Rachelle’s cheerful smile evaporated in an instant. He knew she held out hope that he might stay on Stepping Stones, but that was one commitment he couldn’t make. “Rachelle, I live at sea. You know this.”
“Only because you’ve never had a home on land. The whole island loves you.” She stopped there, but he wondered if she had been about to say that she loved him. Friendship shone from her eyes, but that didn’t mean love. Nobody had ever told him they loved him, and the selfish part of him that hoped she’d be the first unsettled him. Proof he needed to create some distance between them, not spend more time with her looking for a sunken ship. This was a bad move all around.
He could never live on land, and she could never live at sea. He couldn’t imagine how low her spirits would become after days with nothing but water surrounding her. No animals to photograph. No life at all. Diving scared her, so marine life photography wasn’t an option. Seafaring would be a miserable existence. He would be dropping another death tank on someone’s shoulders. No. He wouldn’t do that again. He could never ask her to join him at sea.
If she would even want to.
She’d admitted their kiss had been special, that she was feeling alive again. But that didn’t constitute love. That meant God was waking her up from her self-imposed slumber. Watching the change in her since he arrived on the island proved God was working on her. He was lifting her from the rock bottom she’d been on this past year.
“Gage, haven’t you ever wanted a family?”
Her question caught him off guard. “Pete was my family. He was an older brother and father all rolled into one.”
“Did he boss you around like an older brother?” Her green eyes sparkled with her teasing mirth.
Gage shrugged. “I suppose we had our moments. It would be hard to spend day and night on a boat with someone and not get on each other’s nerves.”
She frowned. “Agent Caden thinks someone killed him. That his death wasn’t an accident. What do you think?”
“I think we should be going if we’re going to make the service.”
“Service? What service? What are you talking about? I thought we were going treasure hunting.”
“We are, but first we’re going to church.”
“Church? I haven’t been to church in over a year. I can’t just show up.”
“Sure you can, and God’s not counting any of the days you missed.”
“Maybe God’s not, but everyone else is.”
“Rachelle, you saw most everyone last night. They were excited to see you. They’ve welcomed you back home.
