Worlds Apart 2
JAKE WALKED SOLEMNLY into his first day of school. It had been two weeks since he had seen either James or Tom. Everyone in school was talking about it, including all the teachers and parents. Just as he walked past the gate, James was overcome by a multitude of students. Jake, Jake! What happened to Tom and James? Everyone wanted to know how it all happened. Everyone wanted to know the story.
Jake didnât respond, but just walked straight ahead without even opening his mouth. As his friends saw him, they interfered, cutting into the group like bodyguards, and telling people to back off. Jake wasnât angry because of the questions the people asked, but because they came just to know the latest gossip, not because they actually cared.
Going to school was going to be torturous; Jake had even begged his parents to let him miss it. Mostly, so he didnât have to see the multitude, but also because Jake felt shattered. Two people he had known since childhood were lost. Not only that, but during the past few years, he had failed to really know them. Sometimes they met up after school, but rarely. Jake used to like having them around, but then, just like everyone who had gone on the trip, he had drifted away. And he resented that ever happening. Now, for the first time since, did Jake fully administer what he had lost. He would never be able to get them back.
âSo, Jake, what really happened?â
Jake turned around to that one person out of so many he had already dealt with upon his return.
âReally? You want to know?â He asked sarcastically.
âEveryone wants to know. We have all heard from our parents but not from someone who was actually there.â
âThey fell off. You happy?â Jake contested as he turned around, trying to contain his anger.
âJake...â
âYes thatâs what happened. I donât know why people keep asking this shit. There is nothing else to say.â
Silence.
Jake walked away from his friends and went into the bathroom. He opened the faucet and let his hands drip with water before raising them to his face. Jake looked at himself in the mirror, analyzing what had become of his life now. On the corner of the window he saw two of his friends open the door and enter. They stood beside Jake, opening the other two faucets as if they were washing their hands.
âJake, Iâm sorry if we said something wrong...â
âNo, you didnât do anything wrong, Iâm just tired of people asking all these question I donât know the answer to, thatâs all,â Jake explained as he tried to keep his voice steady.
âWell, there are people you will have to tell.â
âWho. You?â Jakes looked at them incredulously.
âNo dumbass. I mean that you have to tell everything to Dave and Alex and Scott and Ryan and Matthew and John and Patrick AND Sarah.â
Jake looked back to his reflection on the mirror. âA long list if you ask me.â
âWell you need to, they were the ones who cared most about Tom and James.
