“He drugged you?” Serena asked. The bathtub rim had become uncomfortable and she slid down to the floor mat, her mind only half on Amber’s story. Lance would be back at the house by now, fielding calls from detectives about her connection to the dead man. Lance, who might not be Lance.

“All the way to Las Vegas,” Amber said. Then she looked down at her hands, her nails trimmed short. She picked at a cuticle. “Though I didn’t figure out where I was for two years.”

Serena wasn’t sure she’d heard correctly. “How does that work? Las Vegas isn’t too easy to mix up with other cities.”

Amber caught her eye and tilted her head to one side as if deciding how much more to divulge.

“Of course, Roman was far older than nineteen. Far wealthier than any high schooler I’ve ever known.”

“Why Las Vegas?” Serena prodded before she put everything together. And then she thought she didn’t really want to hear this story. She wanted the sordid tales that involved fourteen-year-old girls to stay at arm’s length the way they did in the papers, or in her parents’ safe house. She wanted them to remain trapped at a safe distance on digital screens, where she didn’t have to look a victim in the eye and find she had no idea what to say. She cleared her throat. “I thought you were going to tell me about the poppy.”

Once again Serena was struck by how similar Amber’s eyes were to her brother’s.

Amber nodded. “I’m sorry for what Kaleo did to you. I can imagine how scared you were.”

“It’s not like I was drugged and hauled to another state.” Serena found it hard to look at Amber, that old familiar shame standing between them. It was a type of survivor’s guilt, her mother had tried to explain, the result of having gone so far through life relatively unscathed.

“You should go soon,” Amber said. “I expect police to come around in the next few hours with more questions about Christopher. They’ll want to see his things, and where he lived.”

Serena closed her eyes. “Kaleo thinks I killed your brother.”

“And Kaleo, a guy with ties to the police department, kidnapped you. Trust me, he won’t want you here any more than you want to be here. But tell me: Did Christopher really die saving your life?”

“Yes.”

“Then I need you to do something for me before you go.”

Hope and fear mingled in Serena’s chest. This woman might ask her anything. She resisted the sense of obligation. “What is it?”

“Ask me a question about Christopher. Anything. Tell me what you want to know about him. I just want to talk about him.”

It was the oddest request ever put to Serena, the last she would have anticipated in this situation. “Why did he help me?”

The corner of Amber’s mouth turned upward.

It was much later when Serena thought of the question she probably should have asked: What is Christopher’s connection to Brock Anderson? But it too was an imposter that
