Chapter Twenty

Throngs of pedestrians clogged the Midtown Manhattan crosswalks, affording Steel Eyes time to disguise herself while Jean Claude drove her back to the Plaza in the limo. Her wig concealed her sparkled hair, sunglasses covered her face, and the costume and mask were stowed in a travel case by the time they arrived.

She passed the front desk unnoticed, but she was distracted by the photo shoot; still, as always, rattled by the effect Alex had on her. Her stomach was as jumpy as the rest of her, and when she opened the door to the suite, Hunt was sitting in the living room.

“Hey, Wave, how did the photo shoot go? I tried to reach you on your mobile phone, but these new things suck with all the tall buildings around.”

She stared at him.

“What? Did something happen?”

Kenna fell back onto the chair facing him. “Alex Winthrop,” she said in disbelief. “Alex happened.”

“What are you talking about?”

She sat forward. “Alex was the photographer.”

Hunter sprang to his feet. “How the hell did that happen, and why didn’t I know about it?”

“Sonja Savarin got sick, and at the last minute, Rocklandia hired Alex to do the photo shoot.”

“Are you okay? ’Cause you don’t look okay.”

Kenna yanked off the wig and scraped back her long hair. “What do you think, Hunt? No, not okay.”

“You think there’s any chance she recognized you?”

“No. But there was a moment when I was staring down the lens of her camera and she put it down. Our eyes locked, and I thought she was going to kiss me. I swear, Hunter, I almost ripped off my mask and kissed her.”

“Oh no. That is not good…especially when the person you do it in front of has a loaded camera and takes pictures for a living. What stopped you?”

“You know that supermodel…shit, what’s her name? Silvana.”

“Who doesn’t know her?”

“She came into the studio because she wanted to meet Steel Eyes. Anyway, she strides right up to Alex, puts her arms around her and kisses her. She’s her lover. I didn’t need this, especially on the day of our last performance.”

“Right now. You need to let this go right now.”

“I’m tired. I can’t compartmentalize my feelings anymore.”

“I know, Wave. It’s almost over. After tonight, you’re literally home free and clear. Look, the massage therapist will be here soon for her appointment with Kenna. Go relax and get ready for tonight.”

“What about the sound check?”

“Mel, JJ and Rich can handle it.”

“Okay.”

Alex’s scent hadn’t yet left Kenna’s nostrils. That scent had been locked in her brain her entire adult life. Closing the door to her room behind her, she breathed it in deep. The stare Alex had given her just before putting the camera down when they were so close had made her pulse quicken. Now, she just felt hollow.

I’ve got to focus on the concert. She picked up the phone.

“Mel,” she said when the other woman answered, “I need you to ground me for tonight, badly. I’m really scattered.”

“We all feel that way. I’m coming in.
