Abbey grabbed on to the rope tightly, wrapping part of it around her waist the way she had seen Madoc use it. She blessed herself, took a deep breath, and scooted up to the window ledge making certain the hook to hold her weight was secure.
“Are you certain you want to do this?” asked Bernadette, wringing her hands in worry.
“Nay. The last thing I want to do is climb out a tower window, but I have no choice. I have to do it for Madoc. Now, make certain the hook does not slip once I am out the window. Then follow me yourself.”
“Nay.” Bernadette eyed the steep drop below with wide eyes and shook her head. “Someone needs to stay here to ward off suspicion. Besides, you might need help from someone on the inside of the castle.”
“Fine then, but just don’t get caught or Lord Shrewsbury will kill you as well.”
Abbey had donned the hose and tunic made for a young man. Bernadette had acquired them for her from one of the servants. If she hadn’t dressed this way, climbing down a rope would be out of the question. Never could she accomplish this perilous task in a gown. She also had the woman to thank for retrieving her dagger from under the bench at the church in secret. Abbey now had it fastened to her waist should she need to use it.
“Wish me luck.” Abbey held tightly to the rope as she lowered her other leg over the ledge. She dangled now from the window held only by a four-pronged hook. Her body froze. Her gaze fastened down to the walkway of the battlement far below. It was void of guards and, for this, she was glad. But she no longer felt she could do this. She squeezed her eyes closed.
“Open your eyes, my lady,” came Bernadette’s whisper from above.
Abbey opened them, wishing this were naught but a dream.
“Now let loose a little and lower yourself down,” Bernadette instructed her. “Use the knots in the rope to secure your feet.”
“I can’t!” Abbey’s whole body shook. She wanted to go back up to the room, but found herself unable to do that, either.
“Just think of Madoc,” came her lady-in-waiting’s advice. “What would he say to you? Picture him in your mind.”
She did just that, and felt her body relax. Abbey pictured Madoc’s clear, green eyes and the way he had coaxed her up the ladder to the roof to see his birds. She envisioned his arms around her as she slowly let her grip slacken, and her body started moving toward the ground. Her fingers felt the knots randomly tied in the rope and used them to secure her feet. She moved slowly, inching her way to the walkway below. All the while, she envisioned Madoc cradling her in a protective hold as he descended with her. Everything was going fine until she heard Bernadette’s warning call from above.
“Hurry, my lady. The guards knock at the door and I fear we will be discovered.
