CHAPTER THIRTY TWO
As comfortable as the bed was, Ian found himself awake, staring at the ceiling when the sun started peeking through the curtains. He'd requested a wake-up call for seven, and didn't feel any pressing need to get up before then. He could hear the shower running in the room next door and wondered who the occupants were. Did they have big plans for the day? Were they in town to visit the college, or were they on business? He hadn't noticed much about the surroundings the previous night and wasn't even sure how far he was from the University of Florida.
The phone rang and he flopped a hand over to pick it up. A recorded message wished him a good morning and advised this was his wake-up call. He swung his feet over the edge of the bed and rubbed his face with his hands.
In the bathroom, his reflection showed two days of stubble. His eyes were bloodshot with purple circles underneath, and his dark hair was matted to his skull. He turned on the cold water, letting the sink fill, then dunked his head. The shock was bracing. When he lifted his head, streams of water dripped onto his shirt and the bathroom counter. He reached for a towel and patted his face dry, then ruffled the towel over his hair before dropping it on the counter. He used his fingers to comb through his hair and shape it into something less vagabond looking.
Next to the television he found a small coffee pot and a bag of coffee. "Come on, come on," he grumbled, waiting for the machine to brew.
He couldn't find cream or sugar so he downed the bitter liquid, relishing the caffeine jolt. He collected the express checkout bill from under the door, made sure there were no unexpected fees, and shoved it into his pocket. The smell of fuel and exhaust fumes assailed him as he stepped outside. A dozen cars lined the pumps at the gas station next door and a steady stream of traffic passed on the road.
He started up his car and gave the engine a minute to warm up while he checked the glove compartment for a cell phone charger. "If this was Lizzie's car, there would be two chargers. She always seems prepared for anything."
Not finding a charger, he tossed the cell phone into the passenger seat without turning it on. Any calls would have to wait until he returned home. Putting the car into gear, he backed out and joined the flow of traffic, taking the curve onto the interstate as fast as he dared.
