Women’s group activities

Women’s groups usually meet once a month for one or two hours. The number of members is between 15 and 40. Each women’s group has a leader, deputy and a secretary elected by the members, which demonstrates that they share a consistent formal structure. The leaders are generally the outspoken ones who have relatively good literacy and numeracy skills. The members learn various agricultural techniques such as SRI, home gardening, compost making, and livestock raising. Meetings usually start with information being shared and discussion of some hot topics such as how to cope with insects if they are destroying rice fields, how to prevent dengue fever and diarrhoea during the rainy season, incidences of violence in the village, and so forth. The common activity in all the women’s groups, and the primary interest of most members, is collective savings. At every meeting, the total capital, amount collected, and current total lending are announced. The interest rate for lending is around 3–4 per cent per month and members share the capital earned through lending at the end of the term.
