And cough.
And cough.
Finally, Brannon pulled the saddle blanket tent away from her face and held both shoulders tight, so she had to remain upright. âKeep wiping her forehead with the cool water,â he ordered.
âShe is sweating all over,â Littlefoot said.
âYeah⦠itâs like a bad fever⦠a very bad fever. She was coughing up blood, wasnât she?â
âYes, I donât think she can go on like this very long.â
Elizabeth began to gasp for breath. Her eyes opened wide, and she stared at Brannon.
âElizabeth?â he whispered.
After a long pause, âYes?â
âYou had a bad spell⦠we were worried.â Brannonâs voice faltered, but he kept his grip on her. âI would lay you down, but it might be easier to breathe sitting up.â
âYes,â she whispered. âHold me up⦠keep holding me.â
âMother,â Littlefoot said, âyou kept calling for your Jesus. I thought⦠I thought you wereâ¦â He couldnât force himself to complete the sentence.
âI didnât know I called out to Jesus, but I could have⦠Heâs the only one I could call to at such a time.â
Littlefoot continued to hold her hand. âI was very worried.â
âWas The Brannon worried?â she asked her son.
Littlefoot shrugged. âHe is never worried.â
âYou are wrong.â She sighed. âDo not be anxious about me until you see The Brannon worried. I am all right now. We should ride on farther.â
âYou need the rest,â Brannon said.
âThis is not a very safe-looking camp,â she replied.
âWe are not riding on. We will sit here until you are stronger.â
âYou are very stubborn.â She offered a smile that came out more like a grimace.
âSo Iâve been told. Would you like to try and eat anything?â
âPerhaps I can drink some water.â
Through the rest of the night, Brannon and Red Shirt took turns standing guard along the trail. Littlefoot never left his motherâs side. At daylight, Red Shirt returned from the lookout and sat down cross-legged next to Brannon.
âWill we ride today?â
âI donât think sheâs up to it.â Brannon motioned to the sleeping Elizabeth.
âDo you think they are following us?â
âYep.â
âThen they will catch us today.â
âThat would be my guess.â
Red Shirt continued, âWe should find better cover. Even The Brannon cannot hide in this clearing.â
âYou ride up the trail and find us some protection. Weâll follow as soon as they stir around.â
Red Shirt saddled his horse. Then he turned back and ran his fingers through his thick, black hair. âWhy does The Brannon do all of this for a dying woman who is not one of his people?â
âBecause, well⦠we are friends⦠and she is one of âmyâ people. A manâs got to do whatâs right.â
âAnd who tells The Brannon what is right?â
âWhy⦠itâs what God wants me to do, thatâs all.â
âI like this God of yours. Is He the Jesus that the Nez Percé calls for in the night?â
âYeah⦠thatâs the one.â
Red Shirt mounted his horse and turned to the trail. Then he rode back by the campfire. âOne day The Brannon should come and visit my lodge and tell us more about his Jesus.â
âThatâs a promise you can count on.
