Experiential Learning

There is a massive underemphasis on experiential learning (i.e., learning in the field) in the twenty-first century. While memorizing data and other facts can be helpful, such rote knowledge does not carry the weight it once did prior to the days of Google and the internet. The traditional educational system, although making strides, has not been able to keep up with this change. If you grew up with standard institutionalized learning, it can be very tricky to transition to a learn-by-doing approach. When you take action and do work experientially, you are more likely to create real growth and change, instead of gathering information exclusively from reading and understanding something on an intellectual level. The conundrum for many is when they don’t have experience, they lack the self-image to take steps forward. So if you don’t have complete footing on an idea, a task, a mindset, or a venture you’re taking on, you want to make a large-scale paradigm shift about how you acquire knowledge so intimidation of failure does not get in your way.

True growth lies in being on the fringe of your competency. This means you have to be willing to risk feeling or looking incompetent to develop a new skill. If you are always feeling competent, you probably aren’t pushing yourself hard enough.

How do you put yourself on the fringe of competency? You put in effort and develop a strong work habit. Sounds easy, but most people are freakin’ awesome at psyching themselves out and quitting before they ever really start. Why? Out of fear of the dreaded F word. Failure. As a function, most never even step onto the starting blocks and develop the necessary work habit, because they don’t have enough self-trust or belief that it’s OK to fail. It’s part of starting a side hustle—you want to own the scrapes and bruises. Learn how to accept the discomfort of failure by embracing the suck. Most people unfortunately suck at sucking. But since it’s unavoidable, let’s learn how to be effective at it!
