What Should You Take Away From This Chapter?

The autonomic nervous system’s more vegetative mechanisms predominate during sleep, especially during slow wave sleep.

During REM sleep, the brain is almost as active as when it’s awake, but the most active regions are not the same as those that are active during waking periods.

Heart rate and blood pressure decrease during sleep and reach their lowest point during slow wave sleep. They rise again during REM sleep and after we get up in the morning. Sleep thus has a protective effect on the cardiovascular system.

Sleep is a state of energy conservation. Body temperature and metabolism decrease during sleep.

The feeling of hunger decreases during the night and sugar and fat metabolism slow down.

Eating large meals late in the evening or, even worse, in the middle of the night can cause an increase in blood levels of sugar and fats.

Sleep deprivation, even a few hours a night, disrupts appetite and metabolism and can also contribute to weight gain.
