Chapter Ten

Skyler ground the beans and put the aromatic grindings into his coffee maker. He pressed the button and the machine began to gurgle and spit. He turned to Sidney sitting on one of his bar stools at the high kitchen counter. She was toying with a Shakespeare bobble head he had placed there, a gift from Jamie when he got his permanent teaching job.

“And so…?” she prompted.

“Okay.” He got two mugs down from his cupboard and placed them next to the coffee maker. “Jamie got into their node or whatever and he clicked on some stuff and got into their files. He said you could navigate anywhere in their files.

So not only could you use their internet privileges but read their private stuff as well.”

“Damn,” she said.

“So is that enough motive for murder?”

“It certainly can be.” She flicked the toy head a few more times, and William Shakespeare, a little wobbly perhaps, agreed with her.

“So? Are you going to question that bartender guy?”

“Probably. I think our officers already talked to him.”

“Well, in view of these new facts,” he said, annoyed and rubbing his sore shoulder, “perhaps a detective should go down there.”

She smirked at him. “Milking that a bit, aren’t we?”

“It hurt,” he whined, still rubbing it. “That sick fuck. If it hadn’t been for Keith—”

“Yeah. How about that guy? Being there in the nick of time. Are you sure he’s straight?”

“Well…I thought he was. He was with a couple of girls. But there’s something weird about him, too. The calculus teacher sort of warned me about him the other day. It was all very strange.”

“So now you’re seeing conspiracies at school?”

He shook his head and turned back to the coffee maker.

Snatching the carafe from the machine, he poured two generous cups. “I don’t know. It was just weird. You should have seen her. It was like she was scared of something.”

“Of Keith?”

“Not exactly.” He shrugged and brought both mugs to the counter. He pushed Sidney’s in front of her, trying not to spill any of it.

“Well whatever it is, stay out of it. You don’t need to meddle in office politics. You’re still low man on the totem pole. You can’t afford to screw up. Districts are still laying off teachers. Though you are the boss’ best bud now.”

Skyler sipped the hot brew, filling his nose with dark aromas and his mouth with its roasted, bitter taste. “Murder? A hell of a way to be someone’s best friend.”

“Yeah.”

They drank silently for a while.

“So what about those guys from the cell phone?” he asked.

“We’ll check them out.”

“You can find them?”

“Someone paid for a phone number. A phone number can be traced to an account. And an account has a bank and a name. But Skyler, I don’t want you involving your friends in this stuff anymore. It’s one thing if you want to play detective, but it’s another dragging someone else into it.”

A guilty flush warmed Skyler’s chest. “I know. Jamie could have been really hurt. But I didn’t think it would harm anything to test a laptop outside the club.
