Chapter Sixteen

The next morning, Colin made his way from the studio’s parking lot to his office, whistling a cheerful tune. Feeling lighter, happier than he’d felt in an age. He’d gotten perhaps an hour of sleep, and he couldn’t keep the smile off his face. Or the memory of Nate’s taste, her sounds of satisfaction, from his mind.

He had quite thoroughly ravished her. But then, he felt pretty ravished himself. He grinned, thinking of how well matched they were.

And then there was her confession. How in the world had she borne that weight by herself all these years? His relief at her trusting him with the truth paled in comparison to how glad he was to be able to shoulder some of that burden for her now.

Granted, a few things remained unspoken between them. Chief among them, where precisely they went next. They weren’t exactly at liberty to carry on a romantic relationship in public.

Colin wanted, more than anything, to ask Nate on a proper date, declare his intentions—not only to her, but to the whole big, beautiful world. But to most of that big, beautiful world, she was still a married woman. So they needed to proceed with care.

And since they’d only spent the one night together so far, he wasn’t sure he’d earned the right yet to ask her to kick Walter to the curb. Especially given her reasons for keeping the truth quiet.

But at the very least, behind closed doors, they could finally be more than friends. His lips curved upward again, unabashedly smug. He’d torpedoed her itch, all right.

“Colin, good morning!”

He looked up to find Lois a few feet in front of him. He hadn’t noticed her approaching.

“Lois. Hello.”

“Sorry, I hope I didn’t startle you,” she smiled. “You looked a bit…lost in thought.”

“I did? Oh…yes…I suppose I was.” He hoped he didn’t appear as sheepish as he felt, given that those thoughts he’d been lost in were quite lascivious, and about her best friend. Colin gulped. Her best friend who hadn’t yet told her the truth about her sham marriage. Which he now had to keep from her as well.

Lois assessed him quizzically, but didn’t press him further. “I’m glad I ran into you. Those pages you sent…they’re fantastic.”

He brightened. “You really think so? I know I didn’t give you much…”

She swatted the air. “It was plenty. From that first scene alone, then reading the rest of the treatment—and knowing your work, of course—I can tell. It’s just what I’m looking for. I’m already getting ideas of how I’d want to shoot it.”

“I’m so glad. I’ll admit, I did struggle a bit with the plotting, wanting to get it just right. But I think I’ve got it figured out now.”

“I have no doubt you do. We’ll talk more when you’ve finished.” She hesitated, still smiling. “I was a little worried about you after last night, you know.”

Oh, shite.

Colin felt the color drain from his face. How did she know? Would Nate have confided that in Lois,
