Chapter Ten ✞♥♫♪
In his favorite chair, Samuel sat upright in his miniscule living-dining combination. Her letters still in his lap, he wiped his face, glanced at the clock, and blinked until it registered. Five fifty-five.
Did that mean something? Was God showing him triple grace?
He pushed himself up. Best get after his chores, Chucky would be at her house in two hours.
Setting the bundle aside, he shifted out of sloth mode. Why hadn’t he made himself go to bed last night? Well, PawPaw always claimed folks overrated sleep. He grinned, thinking of the old man he still missed every day.
Carrying a steaming mug along, he headed out to feed the stock and his barn cats. He rubbed the back of his one semi-tamed feline. He scratched the dark calico he called Smokey and all the reasons he fell in love with Mary Esther in the first place flooded his soul.
Not one woman had ever come close to comparing.
Oh, Lord, make a way. Tell me what I should do.
Finally, he pulled out and beat her to the job. So had Chucky. But that was good. Early always proved better than late. Then like he and his hog hunting buddy moved a house every day, the morning’s work commenced.
Mary Esther arrived ten minutes after the hour, though he would never have known if she hadn’t got out apologizing. Guess the money lady could keep her own schedule, come and go as she pleased.
To her credit, she did have a big box of goodies. She pointed to the far end.
“Cherry and chocolate cream-filled. I’ve got creamer and sugar for the coffee, if anyone wants it.”
Chucky stuffed an entire glazed donut in his trap then reached for a pig in the blanket. Samuel enjoyed the look of disdain she gave the man as he wolfed down the food.
But why should he be so jealous? She showed no interest in his friend, and besides, if she wasn't the one as he thought….
He'd about give anything, but she couldn’t be.
Quite apparent from her reaction to his list of wife requirements, somewhere, sometime, a hairy-legged scoundrel had caught her fancy. If only he'd been there, or better if her daddy hadn't died.
Mercy, Lord, thank You for bringing her back into my life even if not for a wife. Your Word says a friend is closer than a brother. Reaching folks with the Good News through her music, make that enough. As always, not my will but Yours be done. Help us get that house moved today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
A peace settled over his heart. Maybe it simply wasn’t meant to be. Paul never married.
Chucky had brought his deuce and a half to pull the house. After one last inspection of the route, especially the turn, the old girl rolled out. Mary Esther in his truck ahead, lights flashing, him walking behind and to the side to warn Chucky if anything went amiss.
Nothing to it. Until the old house reached the last turn.
His hired help pulled to the right then stopped.
