Drew helped Mrs. Toressi into the front seat of his car. Despite the thick wool coat pulled over her thin shoulders, and the scarf and hat Eden had insisted her mom wear, Drew couldn’t help but notice how frail Mrs. Toressi seemed away from her room. Like one gust of this winter wind could carry her away from them.

Eden hovered to the side to make sure Mrs. Toressi didn’t slip on the ice. She’d made her opinion clear that she didn’t think it was a good idea for her mom to come, but Drew had never met a more determined woman than Mary Toressi.

“Comfortable?” Drew asked once she was in the seat. He went around to the driver’s side to get the heater going while Eden helped her mom buckle the seat belt. Eden slid into the back seat, and they started toward Silver Linings.

“I still don’t think they should call this a spring social,” Drew said. “We are in the dead of winter.” He’d spent several hours the night before, lying awake and listening to the wind whistle through the trees and the cracks in the walls at Jace’s house. Part of his sleeplessness had been the noise and part had been the inability to turn off his mind. He had finished organizing all of Glen’s papers and had moved on to his finances. But tonight was not a night to worry about finances. He’d had enough of that in the past month to last him a lifetime, and next week would be soon enough to figure it all out.

“Drew, have some optimism,” Eden said. She sat in the middle of the back seat, and he felt her lean forward. “It got all the way up to forty-five degrees this afternoon. We’ll have buds on the trees before you know it.”

The setting sun cast a pinkish hue over the snow. Bridger really was beautiful. They’d gotten off to a rough start, but he’d begun to appreciate how quiet everything here was. His whole life had been filled with noise, and he hadn’t realized how intense it could be until he was surrounded by the stillness of Bridger.

If someone had asked him a couple months ago if he would want to live such a slow-paced, snow-muffled life, he would have said no. Quiet used to drive him crazy. Now, in this quiet combined with time to reflect, he’d found peace. His heart still ached for Ariela, and he had no idea what his future held, but he was content in Bridger. At least for now.

They arrived at Silver Linings, and Eden ran inside, coming out a few seconds later with a wheelchair. Drew helped Mrs. Toressi into it and pushed her into the warm building. He
