Wearing the full dress gray uniform of a musician of the 22nd New York State Militia, and company letter on his belt plate, this youthful drummer of Co. B is 13-year-old Charles De Mott, who was the son of a blacksmith resident in New York City. As his regiment had sent their full dress coats home by the end of July 1862, this photograph was probably produced before that date. The captured six-pound gun behind him has “CAPT. COCHRAN/HARPERS FERRY VA” painted on its trail, which may refer to Confederate Captain George Moffett Cochran, Jr, who was on ordnance duty at Harpers Ferry in May 1861 and later served as assistant quartermaster with the 52nd Virginia Infantry from September 2, 1861.
