Chapter 11
The summer flew by and August brought rain and heat. Noah had worried the weather wouldn't permit their trip to the state fair. Fortunately, when the day arrived, there were clear skies and a gentle breeze.
It had been three years since he'd gone. Edgar and Rachel had invited him to join them and their children, but he'd kept declining. There had been no reason to go to the fair.
This year, there were four reasons. Five, if he was being honest.
He didn't think Catherine would enjoy the magic of the fair quite as much as the children but perhaps she'd find it an inspiration for her writing.
He'd bought one of her books from Mr. Kwiatkowski but he didn't dare bring it home. The last thing he wanted was Catherine to think he was prying into her business.
He'd read the book in the few spare minutes he could carve out. While the content was perhaps less ladylike than he'd imagined, he admired the creativity that brought her worlds to life.
"We need to stay together. There are so many people at the fair that it is easy to get lost," Noah said offering his hand to Catherine. She took it and he helped her down from the wagon.
Then, he went around to the wagon bed. James handed him Emma. He set her on the ground but kept hold of her hand.
The children's' eyes were wide as they looked around at the crowded fairgrounds.
"We get to do this every year?" Peter asked.
"Maybe not every year," Noah said. "But most."
He led them to the ticket booth and paid the entrance fee.
"Where are we going first?" James asked. Noah saw the boy's eyes staring at the amusement rides.
"I thought Emma might enjoy the carousel. Afterwards, you boys can try the swing boat and the Sea of land," Noah said.
"Are you sure they aren't too small?" Catherine asked.
"I took my girls on the carousel. We just had to stand beside them and hold them on," he said.
"What girls was those?" Benjamin asked.
Noah swallowed. He hadn't told the children about his daughters but maybe it was time to.
"I had two daughters but they died," Noah said. "They were very small. Younger than Emma."
"What was their names?" Benjamin asked.
"Ava and Fanny. They were twins, just like me and your pa," Noah said.
"Is that why your wife died? Cause she had two babies? " Benjamin asked.
"No. My daughters died first. My girls loved the fair even though they only got to go once," Noah said.
He was sure they would have considered it the best day of their lives. They'd been as wide-eyed and excited as his nephews and niece were now.
They'd ridden the carousel a dozen times and he'd taken them up in a hot air balloon. He'd never seen Abigail so merry either. He'd felt completely content as they rode home with the twins asleep in the wagon bed.
He'd had no idea that in just a few months he would lose them all.
