“A picnic? You and me? Like we used to do on Sunday afternoons?”
I stared at him. Yes, we often did go on picnics.
Sometimes we ate out, and sometimes I would go to his place and sample his cooking. But just as often, we’d grab sub sandwiches and head to the water, eating them while we watched the boats and the waves, trying to keep the gulls from flocking around our food.
“We could go to the picnic shelter by the seawall.”
“You’re serious,” I said. I wanted to spend Sunday afternoon with this man more than anything in the world.
“Of course I’m serious,” he said.
“But it’s raining,” I protested.
“When has a little rain ever stopped us?”
We were standing close together. He reached out and touched my face. I took a breath. He was going to kiss me. This afternoon I would tell him everything that I’d told Stuart. I moved toward him, bumped into his

desk and knocked a little stack of papers, envelopes and books to the floor. As we both bent to pick up the fallen items, our hands touched. I started to laugh, but my laugh died in my throat as I looked down at the CD I was holding.
I recognized the photo on the front. It was one of the five hundred and thirteen e-mails I’d received. There was no identification on the front, just that picture. Had Greg listened to it? If he had, he would have immediately recognize my voice.
“What’s this?” I tried to keep the trembling out of my voice.
“I have no idea. It came in the mail.”
“You got it in the mail?”
He shrugged. “I haven’t had a chance to really look at it yet. I’m thinking it might be some sort of promotional thing for a Christian rock group. Except there’s no name or anything. Do you know who they are? You seem like you know them.” Greg was watching me very carefully.
“This girl looks like she’s part of a Christian rock group?”
He took the CD from my hands, looked at it, turned it over. “You’d think if they wanted publicity, their name would be on it somewhere.”
He put it back down on his desk and I lunged for it.
“Do you have the envelope it came in? Can I see it?”
He was staring at me. “Lilly? Why are you so interested in this obscure little group?”
“I don’t know. I think…” I grasped for something, anything. “I thought I saw their picture somewhere.” I was getting so good at telling lies, what was one more?

“Great. We can listen to it on the way to our picnic.”
There was a strange expression on his face.
I asked for the second time, “Do you have the envelope it came in?”
“Somewhere. You want to know their address?” He rooted through his trash until he brought up a padded CD
mailer. No return address, but postmarked Boston. “You know this group?”
I shook my head. But I was lying.
I’d never told Greg about the Lilith Java Band. That’s one of
