Penile plethysmography (PPG) tests track blood flow to the penis and are used as proxy measurements for sexual arousal. Police departments use them to punish sex offenders by gauging whether suspects are turned on by deviant material. This technology was developed by psychologist Kurt Freund in the 1950s for the Czech military, which wanted to be able to accurately identify homosexual men so that it could purge them. Czech officials recruited Freund because they were irritated that straight men were pretending to be gay so they would get kicked out of the service.
