CHAPTER 18
How about an award
One Saturday afternoon in July 1991, the kids were out somewhere, and Barbara and I were in the kitchen. The house was quiet. I was sitting at the table, relaxing, and looking out the window into the yard. Barbara was rinsing something in the sink. I heard her say, âMarc, next month is August.â
I didnât know what that was about. It seemed kind of a strange thing to say out of the blue. I figured that I probably had missed something, and asked, âWhat did you say?â
âI said that next month is August.â
I loved it when Barbara blurted out things like that. It gave me an opportunity to have some fun with her. In mock seriousness, I answered, âReally? You know, you must be right. Because this month is July. In fact, I know for sure that youâre right. Next month is really going to be August. How great is that!â
I was still looking out the window.
âTurn around and look at me and stop being silly,â Barbara said. âDo you know what next month is?â
âI thought that we just established that it is August?â
âYou are so annoying.â
I loved being annoying to Barbara. She was so beautiful at those times, with that cute, annoyed look on her face. But I knew my limits with trying to drive her crazy and eased up to give her an answer. âOkay, okay. Next month ⦠oh yeah ⦠of course ⦠Itâs my birthday. What are you getting for me?â
I went over the limit with that answer. Barbara walked over to me, put her hands on her hips, and with a stern look and an annoyed voice, asked, âAnd, what else is happening in August?â
âIt ⦠it ⦠itâs our anniversary,â I blurted.
âItâs a special one!â
âReally?â
âYou better stop being so silly and start remembering quickly. Iâm getting annoyed.â
I figured she was already annoyed with me. I knew that Iâd better give up the silliness. âI know, I know. Itâs our twentieth anniversary.â
âYes, it is,â Barbara said with a sweet smile. âSo, what would you like for our twentieth anniversary?â
âGee, let me think. I donât know, havenât thought about it. Well, how about an award?â
The sweet smile on Barbaraâs face quickly turned to a frown and I knew I was in trouble. I shouldnât have said that. Barbara was pumping me to remember our twentieth wedding anniversary and I was playing with her a little too much. With an indignant look, her hands on her hips, and disappointment in her voice, Barbara asked, âSo, you think that you deserve an award for being married to me?â
She was pissed and I knew I was in trouble. I had to quickly backtrack. âNo! I was just joking. Unless you really feel I should get an award. But no, I was just joking. Of course, I know itâs our special anniversary.â
âWell, what would you like to do?â she asked.
âUm ⦠What day of the week is August 29?â
âItâs a Thursday.â
âPerfect! I got it. Letâs check into a hotel for the weekend.
