Maya took a lungful of fresh air filled with the scent of pine needles. After a recent rain, the aroma was especially fresh. The sun shining through branches illuminated the vividness of emerald green around them, the color reminding her of Connemara marble again. She knew that if she followed the narrow pathway north, she’d come to the sparkling waters of a river.

A bird chirruped in the distance, somewhere in the direction of a beautiful rainbow.

“You know what the Irish tale says about rainbows, right?” Connor asked quietly.

“That one can find a pot of gold at the end of it.” She smiled. “I don’t think we have time to follow the rainbow.”

“There’s no need. I already found something much better.” Tenderness in his voice made her look into his eyes.

The way he looked at her…

Her breath hitched, and her heart fluttered. She’d already found something much better, too. He moved closer to her, and her pulse went into overdrive.

Concentrate, Maya, concentrate.

There was a reason she’d led him here. She couldn’t allow her attraction to Connor to make her forget about their mission. Gathering her willpower, she turned away.

She’d always liked the serenity of the place, and the fact that it seemed to be away from civilization and the buzzing city. Small homes painted in mint green were hiding among tall trees.

But the serenity could be deceiving. She pointed out the houses to Connor. “So this is the center for troubled teens. Let’s go to the main building. I’ll introduce you to Nadine. She’s been running this place for decades.”

Connor looked around, as if imprinting every detail to memory. “I have difficulty believing that January volunteered here. Seems to be out of character.”

“There’s probably a lot about my sister that you don’t know. She instructed her agent to say she was in rehab every time she stayed here. I guess she let people think what they already thought of her. Superficial. Spoiled. Selfish. January is none of those things.” Maya led the way to the largest building of the bunch.

“Why did she volunteer here in particular?” He opened the door for her when they reached the building.

How much should she tell him about her sister’s past? About her own past? She stepped inside. “It’s not my secret,” she said finally as she walked down the hall.

“I need to know everything that might help find January.”

Maya paused in front of a massive oak door of Nadine’s office. She did need his help. So far, he’d showed her he was worthy of her trust. She sighed. She hoped January would forgive her. “She was one of the teens sent here.” She knocked on the door before Connor could ask for more details.

“Come in.” Nadine’s voice was firm and confident, as always.

She entered the room, and he followed her.

“Glad to see you again.” Nadine’s short-cropped hair had more gray in it now, but her blue eyes were still bright. And when Nadine got up and went to greet them, she was walking tall, her medium height notwithstanding.
