Real-Life Success Story: Becoming More Efficient with Ultimate Autographs

Ultimate Autographs is a national sports memorabilia company. It is in substage five on the roadmap and is co-owned by Dave Sollis and his brother. When Dave came to us, one of his challenges was getting through a backlog of thirty or forty designs that needed to get done so they could put them on apparel, gear, and other products they sell. Ultimate Autographs had experienced a lot of missed opportunities in terms of expanding their product line to meet the market quickly, and all of it could be traced back to their inefficient design process. At the time, they were using a third-party designer that was taking five to seven days to complete each design they submitted. What’s more, each time they requested changes to a design, it would take another day or two to finalize. It was extremely frustrating for Dave.

I use the example of Ultimate Autographs because the constraint Dave had was so easily identifiable: He needed graphics design to come in-house so his company could get designs done faster. The product-design development speed was just not sufficient to get the company to substage six and netting a million dollars. The outcome framework we came up with looked like figure 14:
