Awakening
In the deep recesses of my mind, a pounding started, faint at first, and then it grew to a voluminous distortion. It jarred me awake, and I sat upright. âWhat?â I glanced around, not recognizing my surroundings at first. âOh, oh yeah,â I said, with a yawn. âThis is Zebulon and Sarahâs house.â After yesterdayâs trials, and with the circle girls triumphantly stalking the streets, I had come straight over here seeking refuge.
The pounding continued. I gathered a robe around me and hurried out of the bedchamber. Sarah stood by a front window looking out.
âWhatâs going on?â I asked her.
She looked at me oddly. âWe do not know. Zebulon has gone to read the placard.â Gesturing for me to sit, she sat on the bench by the window. âPray tell about your gray hair. Zebulon mentioned the witch accusation.â
âYes,â I said, running my fingers through my disheveled hair. I had taken the stage makeup off the night before, and I must have looked a mess. I knew the truth was in order, well, not all the truth. âIâm trying to not be seen by the circle girls, and others, who think me a witch.â
She nodded. âTis an elaborate disguise, Elizabeth.â She smiled. âBut a good one. I had to look twice before I recognized you.â
âI am relieved that it has worked so far.â And scared to death that my luck will run out.
âYou are safe here, but just in case,â she said, studying my hair. âMay I?â Sarah picked up a brush and the hair pins I had taken out the night before.
âYes, please do.â
Her touch was gentler than Gabriellaâs. I hardly felt the knots being worked out, as she brushed through the tangles, and then styled it on top of my head. She held a small piece of flattened copper in her hand. Though intended as reflective, my image in it was quite blurry and hard to make out, but my hair, Iâm sure was adequate. I thanked her and then excused myself.
I went into the bedchamber and got back into yesterdayâs clothes, and then as carefully as I could, I reapplied the makeup. Of course, I cheated a bit and used a tiny mirror from the future that I had hidden in the bag. Returning to the front room, I joined Sarah in the kitchen. She still seemed a bit tired. The door opened, and Zebulon rushed in, his face perplexed and worried.
âWhat is wrong?â Sarah asked.
âTheyâve gone and done it,â Zebulon said gravely. He placed a folded paper on the table and spread it out.
Bess read quickly through the announcement.
