The next morning Sadie worked on her dress. Theyâd brought home Lucyâs gingerbread house, and she wondered if her sister would let anyone start eating it. Sheâd caught Pa in the act just after breakfast, ingesting part of the chimney, but she left shortly afterward and wondered if Lucy had noticed yet. Or cared.
âWhatâs on your mind, child?â Granny Mary asked.
Sadie looked up from her work and glanced around the room. She hadnât heard her grandmother come in. âJust finishing this dress.â She was currently working on a sleeve. âItâs coming along.â
âThatâs good. Anything else?â
âWhat do you mean?â
Granny went to another machine and sat. âYou havenât been yourself lately.â
Tears stung Sadieâs eyes and she willed them away. Sadness had hung over her like a cloud today and she hated it, but didnât know how to get rid of it. Maybe a chat with Granny Mary would help. âHow do you know when youâre in love? I mean really in love?â
Granny Mary smiled. âOh, is that it? Well, if you want something like your Ma and Pa have, all you have to do is watch them a spell and youâll see it.â
âBut theyâve been married for ⦠decades. What about when they first got married?â
âYour ma was a mail-order bride. She became one to escape her uncle â a sick man, that one. Naturally she didnât fall in love right away.â
âI know the story,â she said. âDo you remember when they did fall in love?â
Granny smiled. âWell, I reckon before the whole Olivia Bridger incident.â
âOlivia ⦠oh, yes, Ma told me about her. The lady that spent Christmas on the farm and ended up marrying Mr. Johnsonâs uncle George.â
âYep. She and your ma didnât get on when they first met years before that. Thank Heaven the good Lord changes people. A plumb miracle â and a good clunk on the head â got Olivia straightened out.â
âMa was jealous?â
âOf course. Thatâs one way to figure out if youâre in love.â Granny Mary smiled. âSo, whoâs the lucky fella?â
Her cheeks heated. âIâm not talking about me particularly. Lucy and Brandon worked on a gingerbread house together.â
âAnd was your sister calf-eyed by the end of that?â
Sadie thought of the looks Phoebe gave Taylor when they left. Someone was, all right, but not her sister. âNot exactly.â
âWell, then that poor Wyndham boy will have to wait until she takes some interest in him.â
âWhat if she never does?â
Granny dug around in a basket full of thread spools. âSheâll set her cap for someone else, I guess.â
âBut Granny, there isnât anybody else.â
Granny pulled out a spool and smiled. âHeâs got a brother, doesnât he?â
Ouch. Sadie winced. âYeah.â
âMaybe sheâll show some interest in him.â Granny pulled out another spool. âWhat about you? I thought you had your cap set for one of them.â
Sadie noticed Granny wasnât wearing her spectacles. Come to think, neither she nor Grandpa Harlan had worn them for over a year now.
âWell?â Granny asked. âDid you change your mind about the young man?â
Sadie hung her head.
