CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE - PELL
My balance is off, my head is swimming with visions, and the world beyond Pie is foggy. I hear myself talking and I realize Iâm standing outside the tomb. Did I ever go in?
âYou donât look good, Pell. Come on. Letâs go home and sit down. Can you make it down the hill?â
I feel dumb and weak that she even has to ask me this question. And then the fogginess disappears, the visions recede, and I can concentrate again. âIâm fine.â
âI donât think youâre fine, Pell. What just happened?â
I point at my favorite broken tomb on the top of the hill and Pie tugs me over there. We sit and I take a moment, then try to explain. âI was working on the bagâshit.â I pat my pocket, fully expecting the stupid bag of rings to be missing, but no. Itâs still there. Thank the gods. I pull it out. âThis fucking bag.â
âNever mind the bag, Pell. Tell me what happened.â
âI was heading up to the hallways to find a new pair of pantsââ
âAww.â Pie leans into me, nudging me playfully with her shoulder. âYou were looking for pants.â
I smile at her. âI knew youâd like that. Anyway. I was passing by the black tomb and I saw a door.â
âA door?â
âYep. I saw it, Pie. And then⦠I thought I went in. I thought I followed a passageway into a forest. And found another door. You were on the other side of that door, but it wasnât you, not the way you are now. It was some other you. A little you. Then a more grownup version. And I was there too. You were calling me to you. Well, you calling other me.â
âOh, man. If the universe made two of me, and Iâm just finding this out now, Iâm gonna be pissed.â Her words are teasing and mischievous. Like sheâs deliberately trying to keep the conversation light.
âAnd then after that I turned back and there was a whole line of doors. Like⦠all the doors.â I spread my arms wide. âThousands of doors. They were all open and on the other side was a view of⦠here.â
Her perky expression falls and turns into concern. âThe sanctuary?â
âYes. Like⦠that black tomb is the key to opening all the other tombs.â
âBut wait.â Pie puts up a hand. âWhy would they lead to the sanctuary? Whatâs the point of opening those doors only to find yourself back in the sanctuary?â
âNo. I agree. That makes no sense. But you know what does make sense? I wasnât in the sanctuary when I saw the doors. I was somewhere else. I think when youâre here, and you step into the tombs, you donât see the sanctuaryâyou see whatever world is on the other side.â
âOh, I get it. You were on the other side looking back.â
âYes!â I point at her. âYes. I think I was seeing the doors from the other side.â
âWeird.â
âThatâs not all. Grant was there.â
âGrant? But I thought we decided he was Saturn, or whatever?â
âYeah.
