Chapter 14

For two days now, Rook had helped the serfs tend the fields, which kept him away from what he really wanted to do. But the kisses from Calliope in thanks were worth it. He had the villagers thanking him for helping, as well as for hunting for them. It felt good to work with the land and reminded him of his days as a child in Scotland.

He and his family had farmed the land, as well as learned to fight and be part of the clan. His father, Ross, even raised birds. Rook and his brothers had loved the birds. That was the reason he and his brothers all had birds today.

“Rook, look what the villagers have finished for you,” said Calliope, heading across the field toward him with a few of the children helping her to carry the jousting lances.

Rook wiped the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand and threw down his shovel. He’d dug up more beets in the past two days than anyone could eat in a lifetime.

“Let me see,” he said, taking one of the poles in his hands. The villagers had done a good job. The wood was smooth and there was even a pommel to grip on the end. Wardell made his way through the fields to see it as well.

“That’s pretty good,” said Wardell, taking the other pole and testing its weight. “However, real jousting lances have a guard over the hand and it needs to be a little longer,” he said as he inspect it.

“We’ll work on it,” said one of the teenage boys. “I’ll tell the elders right away.”

“I’ll come with you to instruct them.” Wardell took one pole while the children took the other and headed back to the huts.

“They do excellent work, don’t they?” Calliope reached up and put her arms around Rook’s neck. “And so do you.” She kissed him right there out in the open, and he let her do it.

His hands slipped around her waist and he pulled her closer. He hadn’t had any intimate time in private with her lately since he’d been so busy helping the villagers. Every morning, he snuck to the castle to bring Calliope back with him. Then every night, he escorted her home again. He didn’t like having to stay hidden with her. But he did like the fact the villagers didn’t judge him for kissing a noblewoman when he was naught more than a bastard. Even if he was of noble blood.

“I’ll have Morton bring the cart tomorrow to collect the harvest,” announce Calliope. “The crops will be back at the castle before my uncle returns. Hopefully, that will satisfy him and keep him from sending his reeve to the village or from coming here himself. The serfs are happier when he stays away.”

“I’ll be glad to finally start training to joust tomorrow,” Rook told her. His raven landed atop a fence and cackled. “Someone’s here.” He peered across the field to see a man sitting atop a horse watching them.
