They were on their way to the airport early the next morning. They left Timmons in charge of the kids until Holly could come and pick them up. Samson sat up front with Agent Bob Davenport, who'd been assigned to drive them. The men made small talk while Ivy slumped against the window in the back with her eyes closed. At the airport Bob pulled up to the curb in front of their airline drop off.

Samson had already pulled the two overnight bags from the trunk before Ivy stepped out onto the sidewalk with her purse slung over her shoulder. She straightened the collar of the yellow polo shirt she wore beneath a navy blue blazer. She looked tired as though she'd slept little the night before. The morning sun brought out copper highlights in her hair, and he remembered the feel of it beneath his hands when he kissed her. He pushed the memory away and headed into the airport.

After going through security they hurried through the terminal toward the gate where they would board. Eppley Airfield was busy this morning with people scurrying from one place to the next, some shopping for reading material or snacks, others just killing time until a boarding call. It was a small airport compared to most. People were a little more laid back here, not worried about missing their flights due to crowds or getting lost somewhere in a maze of subways.

Ivy tried to keep up with his long stride but finally fell behind. He glanced back and saw that she had stopped to help a little boy who was lost. A moment later a young woman with bright red hair, wearing a tank top and shorts, came running up and hugged the little boy fiercely.

"I told you to stay by me, Aiden!" she exclaimed in a terrified voice. "Thank you ma'am. I appreciate your looking after him."

Ivy nodded. "No problem. I have kids too," she said as though that explained it all.

Samson waited for her to catch up, and they headed off again. He glanced at her from time to time as they walked down the long terminal, people passing on every side. She was quiet, keeping her thoughts to herself today.

They arrived at the gate with time to spare and checked in. The flight attendant allowed them to be seated first after Samson showed them his credentials. They boarded the plane, stowed the bags in the overhead compartments, and took their seats.

Since no one else was seated near them yet, Samson tried to break the ice that had formed between them. "That was nice what you did for that little boy. Making him feel safe till his mother got there."

Ivy gave him a sidelong look and shook her head. "It wasn't done out of the goodness of my heart. It was a selfish act," she said, her voice soft.

Her eyes glistened and she blinked the tears away. He covered her hand with his on the armrest between them. "How so?"

She drew a shaky breath.
