On the contrary, I have also seen people who have personality traits that are hard to take, people whom others don’t like, but they are so consistent in their behaviors that they are trusted and respected.
There was one guy in the finance department in a Fortune 100 company who really had a foul personality. He was arrogant and disrespectful to anyone he came in contact with—and not just a little. Alas, he was being his real self. But he was also really good at his job. I don’t think anyone really liked to spend time with this guy, but they knew they could always trust his advice, so they went to him. He was so unfailingly consistent in how he dealt with people that it came to be part of his brand. People always knew what to expect. They could brace themselves for it. I actually think it would have been much worse if he had tried to be nice sometimes, because he would not have been able to maintain it all the time. So then people would go in with their guard down and get really slammed.
I’m not recommending treating people badly, but in this case, his consistency helped him earn a lot of respect even though people didn’t like him.
