The motel was right off highway 45 and was flashing Vacancy in orange neon lights. It wasn’t anyplace that he would have chosen for himself, but Tony thought it was the least conspicuous. The building was T-shaped with the top of the T facing the highway. John got them a room on the far end of the building as far from the road as they could get. They were as hidden as they could without having to travel a hundred miles away. A good investigator with instincts for deception could eventually put two and two together and find them, but they didn’t plan on staying long enough for that to happen. They just needed a night or two to let Brunnel try and do his work, and hopefully let Victor cool off the dogs.
Tony, John, and Elizabeth piled out of Tony’s car with four bags of groceries. They had stopped at three different grocery stores to get different items. Elizabeth thought they were being paranoid, but John insisted that they needed to be as careful as possible. Buying all their toiletries and necessities wouldn’t cause alarms across the city to fire off, but it just might cause a clerk to remember their faces. John had almost refused to let Elizabeth go into any of the stores, but Tony convinced him it would be a bad idea for a man to buy a bag full of women’s necessities.
John unlocked the door and pushed it open to allow Tony to enter. Elizabeth stood outside the door, as if she were waiting for something. She looked at the door and then the rooms on either side of their room.
“What’s the matter?” John asked.
She continued to glance around, two bags of groceries still in her hands. “I, uh… where’s my room?”
John suddenly felt hot under the collar. The thought had not occurred to him that she might want her own room. “I registered under one name. The motel people think that only one person is staying in this room. That’s why we got a room in the back – so that they won’t see us come and go.”
She was fidgeting, obviously uncomfortable at the arrangements. “I wish we would have talked about this. I don’t think it would be appropriate.”
Tony stuck his head through the doorway. “Maybe you guys can speak a little louder. I don’t think they heard us across the street.”
Elizabeth let out a long sigh and marched through the door. John locked it behind her. She threw her bags on the bed and stood defensively with her hands on her hips. “I think I should have my own room.”
“If anyone comes checking motel registers, they’ll find that this room is being occupied by a single man from out of town. It’s not quite as suspicious as two men and a woman.”
“Okay,” Elizabeth said with a low growl. “I’ve had just enough of this sneaking around spy stuff.” Her voice rose as the words came out. “I could put up with your
